School Development Plan (SDP)
2025–2026
Supporting every child to thrive, belong and succeed
At Ysgol Carreg Hirfaen, we are proud to be a welcoming Welsh‑medium community school that nurtures confident, capable and compassionate learners. Our School Development Plan (SDP) sets out the key areas we are focusing on this year to improve learning and wellbeing for all pupils.
Below is a summary of our four priorities for 2025–2026.
1. Strengthening Mathematics and Numeracy Across the Curriculum
The Curriculum for Wales has introduced five new skills within Mathematics & Numeracy. This year we are focusing on:
- Developing these skills further through high‑quality teaching.
- Giving pupils more chances to apply numeracy in authentic, real‑life activities across the curriculum.
- Building confidence in problem‑solving and reasoning.
What this means for pupils:
Children will see how maths connects to the world around them and will use numeracy in practical, meaningful ways.
2. Developing a Purposeful and Well‑Balanced Curriculum
We are continuing to strengthen our school curriculum to ensure it is broad, balanced and reflects the Four Purposes of the Curriculum for Wales. Our work includes:
- Reviewing and refining curriculum plans to meet all national expectations.
- Creating engaging learning experiences rooted in our Welsh language, identity and community.
- Ensuring all Areas of Learning and Experience are connected and purposeful.
What this means for pupils:
Learning will be more relevant, more engaging and more reflective of our Welsh‑medium ethos.
3. Strengthening Religion, Values and Ethics (RVE)
Following the 2022 Agreed Syllabus, we are updating and strengthening our RVE provision. We aim to:
- Ensure our RVE curriculum fully meets national requirements.
- Provide inclusive opportunities to explore religions, worldviews, values and ethical issues.
- Develop pupils’ respect, empathy and understanding of others.
What this means for pupils:
Children will learn about a range of beliefs and values, helping them grow into informed, thoughtful and respectful citizens.
4. Developing Staff Expertise in Neurodiversity and Communication Needs
We want every child to feel understood, supported and able to flourish. This year we are:
- Providing staff with training on neurodiversity and how different children learn.
- Strengthening our understanding of pupils with specific communication needs, including speech, language and social communication differences.
- Using this knowledge to adapt teaching and classroom environments.
What this means for pupils:
All children will benefit from a more inclusive approach, with staff who understand their individual needs and how best to support them.
5. How will we know if we have made progress?
We will use a range of clear and measurable indicators to track improvement across all priorities. These include:
For Mathematics & Numeracy
- Increased pupil confidence shown in class discussions and activities
- Evidence of numeracy being applied across different subjects
- Improved outcomes in school‑based assessments
For Curriculum Development
- Consistent planning across all Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs)
- Clear progression maps showing how learning builds over time
- Pupil voice reflecting increased engagement and enjoyment
For RVE
- Updated RVE curriculum documentation aligned with the 2022 Syllabus
- Pupils showing improved understanding of values, belief systems and ethical thinking
- Monitoring showing high‑quality, inclusive RVE provision
For Neurodiversity & Communication Needs
- Staff confidence in using inclusive strategies
- Increased engagement from pupils with additional needs
- Clear evidence of adapted teaching in classroom practice
6. How parents can help
Parents and families play a vital role in supporting learning. You can help by:
For Mathematics & Numeracy
- Encouraging everyday maths at home (measuring, cooking, shopping)
- Talking positively about maths and problem‑solving
For Curriculum Understanding
- Asking your child about their learning and what they enjoyed
- Supporting regular reading in Welsh and English
For RVE
- Discussing kindness, fairness and respect at home
- Encouraging curiosity about the wider world
For Neurodiversity & Communication Needs
- Sharing insight about your child’s strengths and needs
- Communicating openly with staff
- Using any recommended communication strategies at home
